The claim has repeatedly been made, and has often been contested, that a single transcendent being is present or active in all of the world's major religions. In this view, names such as "God," "Allah," "nirvana," "Vishnu," and "Brahman" all refer to the same transcendent reality. Absent from the debate and here provided is a serious study of such claims in the light of the most pertinent philosophical literature, namely that concerning questions of identity and individuation. Of necessity, the terms that the claims employ are very general and abstract: the world's religions, it is said, all r

'Can God Be Free?' studies a central philosophical problem of religion: can it be right to regard God as free, and as praiseworthy for being perfectly good? The author questions this idea and proposes the need for some substantive revision in contemporary thinking about the nature of God.

This collection of essays re-examines works from such canonical figures as Eckhart, Augustine, Plotinus, Pseudo-Dionysius, Nicolas of Cusa, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Julian of Norwich, along with the philosophical thought of Iris Murdoch, Jacques Lacan, and Martin Heidegger, and the contemporary phenomena of the Emerging Church. Presenting new readings of key ideas in mystical theology, and renewed engagement with the visionary and the everyday, the therapeutic and the transformative, these essays question how we might think about what may lie between transcendence and immanence.

This study analyses Meister Eckhart's doctrine on "the eternal birth of God in the soul" in order to draw a comprehensive picture of how it is rooted in medieval philosophical discussions about the relation between epistemology and ethics. Its source is a hitherto insufficiently examined group of sermons which form the only homiletic cycle in Eckhart's work, the so-called Gottesgeburtszyklus (Prr. 101-104). Through a systematic interpretation of the cycle the study shows in what way Eckhart's motif of the eternal birth as a progressive interiorisation of the divine nature inside the human soul is to be evaluated as an epistemologically justified effort. Finally it is shown how this process finds its radicalization in Eckhart's poverty sermon (Pr. 52).

"In this extensive study of two of the most celebrated seventeenth-century religious poets, Robert Whalen examines the role of sacrament in the formation of early modern religious subjectivity. For John Donne and George Herbert, sacramental topoi became powerful conceptual tools with which to explore both the intersection of spiritual and material aspects of human experience and their competing claims to Christianity. Whalen's argument builds upon his central idea of 'sacramental Puritanism, ' or the effort to cultivate a Calvinist sense of interiority through a fully ceremonial apparatus, and thereby to reconcile the potentially disparate imperatives of sacrament and devotion." "Unique in its combination of current historiography and informed analysis, its attention to the sacramental features of Donne's 'secular' lyrics, and its advancement of sacramental thought as an important element of Renaissance English culture, The Poetry of Immanence illuminates a crucial dimension of the work of two major Stuart writers. In his comprehensive critical readings, Robert Whalen offers a substantial contribution to the increasing study of religious themes and devotion in the literature of the early modern period."--Jacket

"In "And They Shall Be One Flesh: On the Language of Mystical Union in Judaism", Adam Afterman offers for the first time an extensive study of mystical union and embodiment in Judaism. Afterman argues that Philo was the first to articulate the notion of unio mystica in Judaism and in monotheism and is the source of the henōsis mysticism in the later Neoplatonic tradition. The study provides a detailed analysis of the Jewish medieval trends that developed different forms of mystical union and mystical embodiment through the Holy Spirit. The book argues that the development of unitive mysticism in Judaism is the fruit of substantial moments of openness, not only to Greek and Arab philosophy but also to Islam and Christianity"--

Deleuze's philosophy of immanence vigorously rejects every appeal to the beyond. For this reason, it is often presumed to be indifferent to the concerns of religion. Daniel Barber shows that religion and Deleuze's thought are both motivated by a demand to create new modes of existence. Thus, the enemy of Deleuze's philosophy is not religion but the transcendent. Deleuze and the Naming of God shows how Deleuzian immanence is able both to oppose religious transcendence and to enter an alliance with immanent accounts of the name of God. In doing so, it shows a way out of the paralysing debate bet

In Literature and the Encounter with Immanence Brynnar Swenson collects nine original essays that approach the relationship between literature and immanence through methodologies grounded in the philosophy of Spinoza. One of Spinoza’s most provocative claims is a simple declaration of ignorance: “We do not know what a body can do.” A literary theory based on immanence privileges the ontological status of the text and the material act of reading. Rather than ask what a text means, the essays here ask what a text can do. Each essay documents a distinct literary and philosophical encounter with immanence and, as a result, opens up a space to read literature as one would read philosophy and vice versa .
